About

About me:

Hi! I’m Tiffany.

I’m bisexual, non-binary, polyamorous, invisibly disabled and feminist. I’m living with white settler privilege on Treaty 7 land in Calgary, Alberta. This land belongs to the Blackfoot Confederacy, Tsuu T’ina, and Stoney Nakoda First Nations, and the Métis Nation of Alberta, Region 3.

My own deep spiritual roots are Norse and Celtic, though to get back to those I have to travel down through a thick layer of Protestant Evangelical Christianity. This journey to discovering something beyond leaving the church, and then leaving capital-a Atheism, has been long and full of fear and shame and joy and healing. When I stopped moving away from practices that didn’t fit, and started moving towards practices that nurtured and nourished me, I found my cozy spiritual home.

Tarot, runes, rituals of becoming and unbecoming – I brought my trauma into these practices and I took wisdom and healing out of them. There’s alchemy and magic in the right metaphor, the right words, the right images, the right stories.

I learned how to read tarot with the help of the Little Red Tarot Alternative Tarot Course (which is amazing), and by reading many books, but particularly Tarot Interactions by Deborah Lipp, and The Creative Tarot by Jessa Crispin. My first deck was the beautiful Shadowscapes and I still love it. These days, I use the Wild Unknown most often for my own readings.

Outside of this work, I am a self-care and narrative coach, and am working on my Master of Narrative Therapy and Community Work degree. I bring the same welcoming, curious, queer- and trans-inclusive, trauma-informed, client-centred approach to my tarot readings as I do to my narrative therapy sessions.

About Fox and Owl Tarot:

Fox and Owl Tarot started with my own personal tarot practice, grew into reading for friends (and their friends), took some hesitant steps into reading at events, and then sprang into joyful existence when Cristy C. Road’s Next World Tarot arrived unexpectedly in my mailbox.

In early 2017, a friend had suggested that I start reading professionally. I loved the idea, but the timing wasn’t right. Then, a year later, another friend called me, bubbling with excitement, suggesting a business explicitly geared towards queer, trans, and polyamorous folks. I loved the idea, but it still wasn’t exactly the right time. Then The Next World Tarot landed, and the time was right. That deck was just the welcome I needed to start reading tarot professionally. And now, here I am!

I do not read tarot to tell the future. I think that what tarot offers us is a rich set of archetypes, symbols, and potential storylines within which we can see ourselves, and better understand the knowledge that we already have about who we are, what we want, what we need, what we fear, and where we want to take our lives.

Tarot can be a tool for self-care, self-knowledge, and, to borrow Northern Lights Witch’s wisdom, collective liberation. This is true especially when tarot is intentionally and explicitly focused on justice, conscious of the effects of trauma on marginalized communities, and actively works to mitigate and counter the harms of ongoing colonialism, racism, ableism, transantagonism, heterosexism, classism, and other forms of systemic oppression.

Fox and Owl Tarot wouldn’t exist without the generous tarot readers, tenderqueer witches, and ritual builders that I have been lucky enough to learn from. Special love to all of the writers at Little Red Tarot (and to Beth Maiden who gave me my first ever professional tarot reading, which got me through an incredibly traumatic time in my life), Northern Lights Witch (whose monthly readings via her Patreon are always insightful and encouraging), Clementine Morrigan (who has given readings to both my sister and myself and helped us navigate a difficult family situation), and Nathan and Stasha (my own tenderqueer witch collaborators and the people who have most passionately and profoundly supported my growing spiritual practice – wonder witches!). Lastly, Pebble Ranger offered me my very first tarot reading many years ago, and introduced me to the practice. I am so thankful.

About the featured reading:

Before I wrote this post, I pulled three cards from the Wild Unknown to get me started. I couldn’t have asked for a better start.

Ace of Wands – Fox and Owl Tarot is a new project that grows out of an existing passion. There’s energy here, and determination, intuition, all the fiery energy of the Wands. Perfect!

Two of Pentacles – The rainbow infinity sign around the two pentacles, and the symbolism of the butterfly make this card particularly resonant for me as a queer tarot reader and queer activist. Fox and Owl exists within, and in balance with, my other work. I have my feet firmly planted in both narrative therapy and tarot – although they don’t always overlap, they also are not in conflict. And they are both explicitly queer, trans, and polyamorous. Just like me!

Ace of Pentacles – Fox and Owl is a business, and that’s okay! Although I bring my anti-capitalist politics into this work, and everything I do (in both sides of my butterfly work!) is sliding scale, this is a business and it is connected to my material life. The new growth on an old stump gives me hope for our collective ability to survive within capitalism until it finally, finally collapses.
